All patients attending for the first time for contraceptives to Charter Medical need to have a 1st Consultation with our Doctor. We advise that you read through all the information below so you can make an informed decision about what contraceptive is best for you.

What can I expect from my first appointment?

On your first appointment, one of our Nurses will take your Blood Pressure, your weight and your height. You will then see our Doctor who will go through a consultation with you.

Your 1st Contraceptive Consultation appointment costs €65.00 and will take approximately 20 – 30 minutes.

This consultation is essential to ensure that our Doctor can take a full history from you.

I am new to contraceptives – how do I go about choosing the right contraceptive for me?

There is a wide range of contraceptive methods available and we want to be able to help you choose a method that is medically appropriate and socially acceptable for you as an individual. You will have an opportunity to discuss all the available contraceptive methods available during your first consultation with our doctor.

I think I would like to start using an oral contraceptive…

If you choose to start an oral contraceptive (the pill) the Doctor will give you an initial prescription for 3/12. You will then need to return to the clinic. There is no charge for this appointment – it is just to review how you are managing with the pill and discuss any issues or concerns you may have. We will also check your weight and blood pressure.

Please remember to book your review appointments before you run out of pills so that you do not put yourself at risk of an unplanned pregnancy.

I am already using the oral contraceptive pill, Do I still need to see the doctor?

You may already be using a form of contraception such as the pill, but before we can issue a repeat prescription there are certain questions that we must ask you. This is essential for your health and well-being.

If you choose to continue your current oral contraception (the pill) you will be given a prescription, usually for six months. You will then need to come back to see the Doctor for your next prescription. The charge for this appointment is just €35.00 and usually takes only 10 – 15 minutes.

What happens if I choose to have a coil or implant fitted?

If you decide you would like to have a Coil or Implant fitted, an appointment will be arranged for you to come back. This appointment will be approximately 30 – 40 minutes.

Six weeks after a coil fitting you will need to return to clinic for a review. There is no charge for this appointment and it will only take 10 – 15 minutes. At this review the Doctor will examine you to make sure that the coil is in place and discuss any issues or concerns that you may have.
